The European Union has relocated its upcoming informal defence summit from Limont Castle in Liege to the Egmont Palace in Brussels, citing security considerations. The meeting, scheduled for 3 February, marks the first European summit since the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month. Maria Tomasik, spokeswoman for European Council President António Costa, confirmed the change, stating, “The venue has been changed following a reassessment of the measures needed to ensure the security of the meeting.”

The Egmont Palace, a historic location situated in the heart of Brussels, was selected for its advanced security infrastructure and state-of-the-art translation facilities, critical for hosting leaders and delegates from across the European Union. Limont Castle, an 18th-century estate approximately one hour from Brussels, was initially chosen for the event but deemed unsuitable given the sensitive nature of the discussions. The summit will focus on European defence strategies, emphasizing increased responsibility and cooperation among EU member states.

The gathering will bring together leaders of the 27 EU member countries, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This unique convergence highlights the growing emphasis on bolstering Europe’s defence posture and strengthening ties within NATO. President Costa emphasized that the summit’s goals align with fostering a resilient and autonomous Europe, which he described as essential to reinforcing the transatlantic partnership.

The discussions are expected to address frameworks for enhanced military cooperation and explore strategies for collective defence amid evolving geopolitical challenges. The Egmont Palace, frequently used for high-profile diplomatic engagements, offers a secure and centralized setting. The venue’s selection underscores the EU’s commitment to ensuring robust measures are in place for critical discussions that could shape the future of European defence policy. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
